EGB History
Evergreen Bay Resort was started by Mert and Carrie Schuler and in 2025 we will be celebrating our 75th year open as a Resort here in Elk Rapids on the beautiful Elk Lake.
Mert and Carrie Schuler started EGB the summer of 1950 with the help of their boys, Adam (Bud) and Chuck. All the buildings have a story of how they ended up on our property-from their house to the apartments (unit 1/2/3) to the main garage. The only original building is the ice shanty, which was used by Schuler Ice Co. This was Mert’s business that occurred right here on the property! The ice from Elk Lake would be pulled out by horses and then either put in box cars headed to Chicago or to the locals refrigerators (ice box).
The apple tree at the center of our beach has seen it all. Chuck taught countless guest the art of water skiing and to this day a lot of guest have at least one family member that learned from him.
We are also proud to say that we have guest that are on their 4th generation coming to EGB! Tekla is the granddaughter of Mert and Carrie and has now taken over the management of the property with help from her children, Katy and Tom and Katy's husband Frank along with their daughter Ava. This resort is truly owned and ran by the family and also has been passed from generation to generation. It’s truly a family affair.
We are located off of US-31 South in Elk Rapids and an easy access to all that Northern MI has to offer
We are located a short walk from downtown Elk Rapids- where you can find quant shops, a movie theater, a good drink and lots of food!
You can also walk along Lake Michigan at our many local shore side parks only a mile away!
We are 90 miles due south of the Mighty Mac and Mackinac Island, 45 miles South of Petoskey and 30 miles South of Charlevoix
Traverse City is due south from us about 15 miles with Acme 10 miles where our local Meijer grocery store is located. Or ask us about Stocked! This business is owned by a fellow Elk Rapids graduate that understands the need for local grocery delivery services so the locals or vacationers can spend more time enjoying their vacation and less time shopping for their stay!
If you're up for an adventure, Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore is only 40 minutes to the West as well as our famous M22 scenic road.
Old Mission Peninsula is only 20 minutes away with their many wineries and the Old Mission LightHouse at the very tip of the Peninsula.
If golf is your passion we are 10 minutes north of the Bear at Grand Traverse Resort, 15 minutes South of Agaming and our Elk Rapids Historical golf course is a short few minutes away. There are also many courses within 60-90 minutes.
If laying in the sun, swimming and boating are what you are looking for we have a sand pile to walk through and into Elk Lake. We have a sunning raft out front for all to enjoy and our shoreline has Cedar swings and adirondack chairs for relaxing.
After playing all day you can get the charcoal grills going and enjoy a picnic in our screen-in patio. Our patio has 5 picnic tables and many games, books and puzzles.
